Halele'a Cultural Exploration Coming Soon
By Gayla Spencer, Program Leader
We are preparing for an exciting summer and looking forward to serving Hanalei keiki as we have for many summers. In case you aren’t familiar with our summer program, here’s some fast facts on what we offer.
Our Program includes Hawaiian values, music, hula, chant, stories, games, drama, many arts and crafts, and outings to the beach and other areas on the island.
We also enjoy lessons from UH students on a variety of health topics. In the past, they’ve covered Hand-Washing & How Germs Grow, Self Esteem, Water Safety, the Food Pyramid and visits with an E.R. doctor, police and ambulance crews.
Each child joins a Hui with a junior leader. The children learn and write about a daily Hawaiian value & weekly ‘Olelo No‘eau.
At the end of the summer: we hold our Ho’ike and Pa’ina, so the children can share with ‘ohana all that they learn...song, dance, art projects and a potluck meal.
We are fortunate to have on our staff: Kumu Naomi Yokotake who guides our program & curriculum, Hula & Music and local artists Wicki Van DeVeer & Susie Faye who lead our arts & crafts activities along with assistant Susan Farrar.
